The President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), read in plenary this Tuesday 8 the request to create a CPI to investigate “the growing influence of virtual betting games online in the budget of Brazilian families”.
The request came from Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS) and received the support of another 30 senators, three more than the minimum necessary.
The commission, with 130 days to complete its work, will have 11 full members and seven substitutes. They will also investigate the possible association of betting companies online “with criminal organizations involved in money laundering practices, as well as the use of digital influencers in the promotion and dissemination of these activities”.
Soraya argued that the CPI’s objective is to analyze currency evasion and money laundering practices, in addition to the influence of Brazilian personalities on the operation of betting programs. The suspicion, highlighted the senator, is that the softwares They are programmed to cause losses to bettors and always guarantee an exaggerated profit margin for companies.
“There is no point in closing our eyes to this problem. It’s a fact. It is one of the main reasons for attacks on life and separations”, he maintained.
The government leader in Congress, senator Randolfe Rodrigues (PT-AP), stated that the issue has become a serious social problem and a public health challenge. He said he sees the CPI as a response from the Senate to society and defended a debate on the publicity of bets.
