Donald Trump promised that November 5th will be “liberation day”, while painting an apocalyptic picture of a country “occupied” by hordes of criminal foreigners, during a rally in a city that, according to him, was taken over by the Venezuelan Trem de Aragua gang.
In the final stretch of the race for the White House, the former president combined a protectionist economic discourse with the demonization of immigrants to stimulate his base, made up mainly of white working-class citizens. His electoral opponent, on the other hand, Kamala Harrisprefers to convey a message of unity.
In a more extremist speech than usual, Trump loosened his rhetoric against immigrants. “The United States is known throughout the world as an occupied country. We are being occupied by a criminal force,” said the Republican in Aurora, Colorado. “But I promise you: November 5, 2024 will be liberation day in the United States.”
Trump accused Kamala of having imported “an army of illegal alien gang members and criminal immigrants from the dungeons of the Third World” and having “relocated” them in Aurora.
Supporters of the radical right claim that the city is terrorized by immigrants from Latin America since the release of a video showing armed Latinos in a building, despite denials from authorities.
‘Enemy within’
Trump called the vice president a “criminal” and falsely claimed that Venezuelan gangs in Colorado were authorized to shoot at police. According to him, there is an “enemy within”: “All the scum we have to deal with who hate our country.”
The Republican promised to deport gang members until there were none left and described some of the measures he will take if he wins the elections, including restoring Title 42, a health rule implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic that allowed practically all immigrants to be blocked.
“They are very, very sick, with highly contagious diseases, and they are brought to infect our country,” Trump said of the immigrants, whom he has already accused of “poisoning” the United States and eating pets.
“I will send a bill to Congress to ban all sanctuary cities,” which protect immigrants from expulsion, “and we will begin the largest deportation operation in American history,” continued the tycoon.
Kamala, for her part, campaigned in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she promised to create a “bipartisan board of advisors” and repeated that she would include a Republican in her cabinet.
“In recent years, some powerful forces in our country have tried to divide us as Americans. We have more in common than the things that separate us,” said the Democratic candidate.
Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned in an interview released this Friday that Kamala needs to “be prepared for last-minute surprises in October”. In 2016, when Hillary was the Democratic candidate against Trump, she faced disclosure, just before the elections, of thousands of e-mails of his campaign obtained by Russian agents, according to the CIA.
