The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumdefended, this Friday the 11th, the recognition of two states, Palestine and Israel, to achieve peace in the Middle East.

“The Palestinian State must be recognized in all its magnitude, as well as the State of Israel. This has been Mexico’s position for many years”, declared the president in her first mention of the issue after taking power on October 1st.

At his morning press conference, Sheinbaum also condemned violence in the Middle East and declared that “war will never lead to a good destination.”

The president is of European Jewish descent, but declared herself an atheist and, years ago, criticized Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip in a public letter.

Sheinbaum also recalled that the previous government, led by Andrés Manuel López Obradorcondemned the attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, which left more than 1,200 people dead, as well as the subsequent Israeli bombings on Gaza, which have so far killed more than 42,100 people.

The Tel Aviv government has expanded its military campaign in Lebanon, where the Islamist group Hezbollah is located, which launched operations against Israeli territory in support of Hamas.
