The Israeli army announced on Friday that it had killed the main commander of the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad in the Nur Shams refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
The Army said that Muhammad Abdullah it was “eliminated” on Thursday after an Israeli plane attacked the Tulkarem camp.
Another “terrorist” was killed in the operation, in which M-16 rifles and bulletproof vests were recovered, he added.
Abdullah was the successor to Mohamed Yaber, also known as “Abu Shuyaa”, who was killed in an Israeli attack in late August.
Islamic Jihad is an ally of Hamas and both groups fight Israeli forces in West Bank by you Gaza Strip.
Violence has increased in the West Bank since Hamas launched its unprecedented attack on Israel in October last year.
Since then, Israeli troops and settlers have killed at least 705 Palestinians in the West Bank, according to the Ramallah-based Health Ministry.
Israeli officials say at least 24 Israelis, including civilians and members of the security forces, were killed in attacks by Palestinian militants or in army operations during the same period in the West Bank.
