The cyclone Milton arrived this Wednesday 9 in Florida as an “extremely dangerous” category 3 hurricane (out of a total of 5), bringing storms, winds of almost 200 km/h and potentially deadly flash floods, reported the National Hurricane Center of the United States (NHC).
“Information shows that the eye of Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, in Sarasota County, along the west coast of Florida,” says the NHC bulletin released at 8:30 pm local time (9:30 pm Brasília).
Milton is expected to cross Florida like a hurricane and head towards the Atlantic Ocean, with the tourist center of Orlando, where the Walt Disney World park is located, in his path.
The president Joe Biden said Milton could be “Florida’s worst storm in a century” and urged Americans in at-risk areas to leave “now, now, now.”
“It’s a matter of life and death,” added the president, who canceled a trip to Germany and Angola this week due to the emergency.
The system’s arrival occurs less than two weeks after the passage of another hurricane, Helenewhich left a trail of more than 800 kilometers of devastation in the southeastern states, with particular intensity in North Carolina, after entering northwest Florida as a Category 4 hurricane on September 26. With more than 230 deaths, this was the deadliest US hurricane since Katrina in 2005.
