What is PIS?

PIS (Social Integration Program) is a program that was created with the purpose of enabling a better distribution of national income.

What is nowadays commonly called PIS is, in fact, the program that gives the right to salary bonus, benefit worth a maximum of one minimum wageproportional to the length of service of each worker, distributed annually by Caixa Econômica to workers in the private sector who work under a formal contract.

Originally, this was the name given to the shares of the fund made up of amounts collected from private companies, which were converted into benefits for workers with a formal contract from 1971 to 10/04/1988.

From 1988 onwards, the PIS-PASEP Fund no longer had collections for individual accounts and the resources arising from contributions to PIS and PASEP began to be allocated to the Workers’ Support Fund (FAT) to cover the costs. the Unemployment Insurance Program, the Salary Allowance and the financing of Economic Development Programs by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development – BNDES.

This PIS quota fund was extinguished by MP nº 946/2020which determined the transfer of his assets to the FGTS. The linked accounts held by PIS/PASEP Fund participants are now linked to the FGTS and follow its rules.

Remember that the PIS/PASEP Quotas are the result of the credit deposited by the employer in the PIS/PASEP Fund from 1971 to 10/04/1988 and are now part of the FGTS. The Salary Allowance is the constitutional benefit of the worker’s right that meets the established requirements. Therefore, they are not synonymous.

Who is entitled?

Another common question is about who is entitled to PIS. To access the salary bonus/PIS, the worker needs to:

  • Be registered with PIS for at least 5 years (as soon as the worker is registered with a company for the first time, this registration is carried out by it);
  • Have received an average remuneration of up to two minimum wages from a legal entity employer during the period worked in the base year (2021);
  • Have worked with a formal contract for at least 30 days in the base year (2021);
  • appear in THE PRESIDENT – Annual Social Information List – relevant to the base year.

Therefore, workers employed by Individuals, such as maids or rural workers, are not entitled to the benefit.

When to withdraw

Every year, the PIS salary bonus withdrawal is released according to the worker’s date of birth.

In 2024, it started on February 15th and the deadline for moving the benefit is until December 27th.
