How to consult the PIS? See step by step and who is entitled

Checking the PIS number is a necessity that every worker with a formal contract has when they need to access benefits such as salary bonuses and FGTS (Service Time Guarantee Fund). But finding this number can often be quite a challenge.

What is the PIS number?

The PIS (Social Integration Program) number is an identification code assigned to Brazilian workers with a formal contract. It serves to manage the collection of social contributions such as FGTS and the unemployment insurance.

This number is essential for accessing labor and social benefits throughout your professional life.

Do I need to issue PIS?

The PIS number is issued automatically when the worker is registered for the first time in the Caixa Econômica Federal registration systemgenerally when the company registers the employee. If you do not have a PIS number, it will be generated when you are formally hired.

It is also possible to go to a Caixa Econômica Federal branch with your personal documents and request the issuance of PIS.

Are PIS and NIS the same thing?

The difference between the PIS (Social Integration Program) and the NIS (Social Identification Number) is often confusing for people. Both are represented by the same number and are present on the workers’ work card.

PIS, in addition to being the name given to the identification number, is the contribution that companies make to guarantee payment of the unemployment insurance and the salary bonus to workers with a formal contract. It is generated in the worker’s first job.

The NIS, on the other hand, is generated by the database of the National Register of Social Information (Cnis)which aggregates data on people who receive social benefits, such as Bolsa Família.

What is the difference between PIS and PASEP?

The PIS (Social Integration Program) and the PASEP (Public Servant Assets Formation Program) have the same objectivebut they are aimed at different audiences. PIS is aimed at workers in the private sector, while PASEP is aimed at public servants.

Both programs provide social benefits to workers, such as salary bonus.

Where can I find my PIS number?

You can find your PIS number in various documents and platforms. It is present in your work card, in your FGTS statement, in your Citizen Card and can also be consulted online through government applications and websites. See below:

How to check PIS using CPF?

Follow these steps to find your PIS number using your CPF:

  1. access the My INSS portal;
  2. click Login with gov.br: a window pop-up (both on desktop and cell phone) will open and ask you to register, providing CPF, date of birth, name, email, cell phone, mother’s name and state. Then log in;
  3. authorization of personal data: You must authorize access to your personal information to be able to use the service. Read the terms of use and privacy policy at the indicated link to understand your privacy;
  4. confirm your details: The system will then ask you to validate your personal data. Answer the questions that appear on the screen. This step is necessary to enable your registration as a user in the system.
  5. Log in again and access “My Registration”: in this area, you will find all your personal data registered in the system. To check your PIS number, simply go to services → other services → my registration. At the bottom of the screen you will find your number.

The PIS/NIT Number consists of 11 digits configured as follows: 000.00000.00-0.

It is important to highlight that the NIT (Worker Registration Number) is equivalent to the PIS/PASEP of workers who have never had an employment contract. If the worker is hired by a private company, the NIT will be used for PIS registration. If he enters the public service, he will receive the PASEP.

What are the other ways to consult the PIS?

In the Digital Work Card

If you have the Digital Work Cardyou can find your PIS number through the app.

To do this, do login no portal gov.br. After accessing, select the “Benefits” option in the bottom menu. Then, choose “Salary Allowance” and click “Consult” to access your PIS data.

In FGTS

Via the FGTS app – Play Store (Android) and App Store (iOS/Iphone) –, you can also check the PIS number by following a simple step-by-step guide:

  1. download the FGTS application on your cell phone and log in;
  2. on the home screen, click on any contract that is listed in your FGTS summary;
  3. Finally, click on “Generate PDF extract”. In this document, you will see your PIS.

At the Cashier’s Office

To consult via Caixa Trabalhador appfollow the steps below:

  1. Download the application and click “Access”.
  2. enter your CPF and confirm to receive a code in the email registered with Caixa;
  3. enter your password and log in;
  4. In the bottom menu of the screen, click on “My NIS” and you will have access to your number.

On the CNIS website

No CNIS website (National Register of Social Information), it is possible to carry out the consultation following the steps below:

  1. access the website and click on “Citizen”;
  2. in the top right corner, select “Registration – Affiliate”;
  3. fill in the requested information, such as your name, mother’s name, date of birth and CPF;
  4. Check the option “I’m not a robot” and click “Consult”.

If you already have a registration, a message will appear informing you of your PIS number.

By phone from INSS

The number of public consultations with the INSS is the 135.

After the call is completed, enter your CPF and select option 0 to speak to an attendant who can assist you in identifying your PIS number.

By phone from Caixa

Caixa Econômica Federal offers 24-hour telephone service with the possibility of checking the PIS number. By calling 0800 726 0207 and following the options indicated, you can speak to an attendant.

Who is entitled to PIS?

The benefit is granted to workers who:

  • receive, on average, up to two minimum wages per month from employers who contribute PIS or PASEP;
  • have carried out paid work for at least 30 days in the base year; and
  • have been registered for at least 5 years in the PIS-Pasep Participation Fund or in the National Register of Social Information (CNIS).

It is also necessary that the data has been correctly reported by the employer in the Annual Social Information Report (Rais). The worker’s CPF must also be in good standing with the Federal Revenue Service.

Who cannot receive a PIS benefit?

There are situations in which the worker does not have the right to receive PIS. They are:

  • Workers who work in the public service, such as employees of public bodies, receive the PASEP (Public Servant Assets Training Program), and not PIS;
  • Domestic employees (even those registered) are not entitled to PIS, as they do not contribute to the program;
  • Anyone who works in the rural sector, but is hired directly by an individual, is also not entitled to PIS;
  • One of the rules for receiving the bonus is to be working with a formal contract, therefore, self-employed professionals do not receive PIS;
  • Partners and business owners, who are formally part of the legal entity, are not entitled to the salary bonus;
  • Anyone who received sickness benefit for more than one year in the base year is also not entitled to the benefit.

How is my benefit amount calculated?

The worker needs to make a calculation to find out how much they will receive in salary bonuses (via PIS or Pasep). The account is as follows: the value of the current minimum wage is divided by 12 and multiplied by the number of months worked in the base year.

For example: whoever worked for a month has to do the following calculation: 1412/12 = 117.6 x 1 = approximately, the result is R$ 118. See the table below:

Salary bonus: how to withdraw PIS money?

The salary bonus is an annual benefit, the maximum value of which is no more than one minimum wage (R$1,412).

To withdraw PISthe worker can use the Citizen Card at Caixa self-service terminals, at lottery outlets or directly at a Caixa Econômica Federal branch.

The payment schedule for the PIS/Pasep 2024 salary bonus (base year 2022) occurred between February and August. According to the Deliberative Council of the Worker Support Fund (Codefat), the 2024 salary bonus is available for approximately 24.5 million workers not Brazil.

The 2024 payments were divided into seven batches, based on the month of birth. The money is deposited on the batch release dates and can be withdrawn until December 27, 2024. After the deadline, you will need to wait for a special call from the Ministry of Labor and Pensions.
