Fuad Noman (PSD) was re-elected mayor of Belo Horizonte after defeating Bruno Engler (PL) in the second round of 2024 municipal elections held this Sunday (27).

Noman obtained 53.76% of the valid votes against 46.24% for Engler.

In the first round, Engler finished in first place with 34.38% of the valid votes against 26.54% for Noman.

Who is Fuad Noman

Fuad Jorge Noman Filho, 77 years old, is from Belo Horizonte, a writer, economist and politician. He took over as Mayor of Belo Horizonte after the resignation of Alexandre Kalil.

Noman holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Unified Education Center of Brasília, a specialist in Economic Programming and Budgetary Execution, as well as an Honorary Doctorate from the State University of Montes Claros.

He was Executive Secretary of the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic during the government of Fernando Henrique Cardoso and a consultant for the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In Minas Gerais, he was Secretary of State for Finance between 2003 and 2006, Secretary of Transport and Public Works between 2007 and 2010. He was also President of Gasmig between 2011 and 2012.

At Belo Horizonte City Hall, he worked as municipal finance secretary between 2017 and 2020, when he was elected vice-mayor on Kalil’s ticket. After Kalil’s resignation on March 25, 2022, for his candidacy for state government, Fuad became mayor of the capital of Minas Gerais.

Now, he has been re-elected to govern the city from 2025 to 2028.
