The fiscal adjustment that should be announced in the coming days by the federal government will not be a “electric saw” in terms of spending, said the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, this Friday.
“Brazil already has a fiscal framework, is growing at more than 3%, has inflation under control and is generating jobs. Every tree that grows has to be pruned to have stronger, better fruit,” Padilha told journalists at a G20 event in Rio de Janeiro.
“Every tree that grows needs to be pruned, but without a chainsaw. You will prune in an organized way,” said Padilha. Asked if the spending cut would be radical, the minister replied that “No…It will be what a good pruner does. It will be something well done and not like in other times when we used an electric saw and cut everything and we lost the work of growth, reducing inequality and creating jobs”, stated Padilha.
In recent days, the government’s economic area has been meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and representatives from ministries to discuss spending cuts. The government is making efforts to reach the zero deficit target by 2024.
Padilha reinforced that the economic foundations of the current government, such as growth, employment and income, will be guaranteed. “This will certainly be preserved,” he stated.
Explosions
Padilha also commented this Friday on the explosions in Praça dos Três Poderes in Brasília on Wednesday night. According to him, hate speech and political extremism may be fostering this type of radicalism.
For Padilha, it was an attack on democracy and “weakened” the idea of amnesty for participants in the coup acts of January 8, 2023.
“This very serious crime rekindles what happened on January 8th… We do not want to encourage hatred and intolerance. The act has a political impact, yes, and it reminds us of January 8th and makes the situation more difficult for those who still advocate covering up those who acted on January 8th”, said the minister.
