The European Commission will present a new law to favor the expulsions of irregular migrants, announced the president of the European Union’s executive body, Ursula von der Leyenin a letter addressed to the 27 member countries, published on the evening of Monday 14th.

“The Commission will present a new law proposal” with “clear cooperation obligations for expelled people” and the desire to “effectively organize the return process”, said Von der Leyen, responding to requests from several EU Member States.

“We need a new legislative framework to reinforce our capacity to act”, explained the president of the Commission in this letter addressed to the bloc’s countries, ahead of the European summit scheduled for this Thursday and Friday in Brussels, dedicated in part to migration.

To this end, Brussels proposes to improve the processes of return of people in an irregular situationin particular establishing the mutual recognition of decisions taken by one or another Member State.

“We must build a level of harmonization and trust that allows us to ensure that migrants, the subject of a decision to return in one country, cannot use loopholes in the system to avoid this return in another country”, stated Von der Leyen.

Last Thursday, European Union interior ministers debated in Luxembourg the further tightening of migration policy, following requests to review the “return guideline” and discussions on the transfer of migrants to third countries.

Many European countries have called for a revision of this 2008 directive that harmonizes rules on deportation at borders. However, a first review attempt in 2018 failed.
