From December, Argentines will be able to buy up to US$400 on sites like Shopee and AliExpress without paying import tax – a decision that goes in the opposite direction to that of Brazil, which decided this year to tax purchases up to US$50, previously exempt.
It does not mean complete exemption. Packages up to US$400 continue to pay Argentine VAT of 21%.
Another measure was to increase the purchase limit for individuals (without changing the import tax, mind you). Now Argentines can buy up to US$3,000 per operation in these direct imports. Previously, the limit was US$1,000.

In Brazil, it is worth noting, the ceiling is already US$3,000 – and US$10,000 in the case of medicines. After that, corporate taxes (IPI, Pis, Cofins) enter the fiscal ball.
The information about Argentina’s liberal measure comes from a tweet by Luis Caputo, the Minister of Economy. He published on Friday (15): “We want all Argentines to have access to more competitive prices, not just those who have the opportunity to travel and bring clothes, toys and small appliances from abroad.”
The message also makes it clear that the government aims to expand the supply of products in the Argentine economy. This is a measure that helps combat inflation (still at 2.7% per month).

For those who purchase on international trips, Brazil remains more liberal than Argentina: up to US$1,000 per person is tax-free. There, the limit remains at US$500.
Use: information circulates on several Brazilian websites that Argentina has completely abolished import taxes on products purchased abroad. This is not the case – as you saw here.
