Nas 2024 municipal electionsin at least 12 of the 51 cities there was “turn” in the second round with the victory of the candidate who finished the first round in second place in the dispute.

There are five capitals — Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, Goiânia, Palmas and Porto Velho — and seven more cities: Caxias do Sul (RS), Limeira (SP), Olinda (PE), Piracicaba (SP), Ponta Grossa (PR), Santa Maria (RS) and Taubaté (SP).

Furthermore, in Jundiaí (SP) there was also a turnaround, but the candidate who turned around and finished in first place is “sub judice” and the result has not yet been made official.

With this, the 2024 elections maintain the trend of previous municipal elections in which, on average, one in every four cities had a second round.

In general, the candidate who finished with the most votes in the first round has a better chance of confirming this majority and also winning in the second round. Game “turns” are rare — but they happen.

In the last three municipal elections, in around one to four cities where there was a second round, the candidate who received the fewest votes in the first round turned the tables and was elected. Look:

  • 2012: 13 out of 50 cities (26%)
  • 2016: 14 of 57 cities (24.5%)
  • 2020: 17 of 57 cities (29.8%)
  • 2024: 12* out of 51 cities (23.5%)

In the first round, Engler finished in first place with 34.38% of the valid votes against 26.54% for Noman. EmPorto Velho (RO)
