O Supremo Tribunal Federal This Thursday the 17th, the trial on measures to guarantee health care for transgender and transvestite people according to the gender with which the patients identify is concluded.
After recognizing the responsibility of the Public Power, the Court detailed the initiatives that must be carried out by the Ministry of Health:
- adapt the company’s information systems Unified Health Systemin order to guarantee the scheduling of exams and consultations in all specialties regardless of biological sex registration;
- changes must be made to all SUS systems, so that the population has full access to healthcare, under equal conditions;
- inform state and municipal departments of changes and help local governments adapt their systems;
- change the format of the Declaration of Live Birth, to include the categories of parturient/mother (mandatory completion) and legal guardian/father (optional completion). The DNV is the first document that identifies the newborn.
The trial took place following a lawsuit filed by the PT in 2021 that pointed out omissions by the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in providing care to trans people and demanded adaptations in the SUS. In May this year, the Ministry of Health changed the gender classification for more than 200 procedures.
