The doctor Mayra Pinheiro (PL-CE) took office this Monday 16th as federal deputy, during André Fernandes’ (PL-CE) leave to run for mayor of Fortaleza.
In 2022, Pinheiro received 71 thousand votes, an insufficient number to reach the Chamber. However, he managed to remain in the second place in his coalition.
She became known during the pandemic as “Captain Chloroquine”. Covid’s CPI in the Senate recommended the indictment of the doctor for three crimes: epidemic resulting in death, malfeasance and crime against humanity. The first two are provided for in the Penal Code; the third, in the Treaty of Rome.
The CPI concluded, according to its final report, that Mayra Pinheiro – then secretary of the Ministry of Health – and Eduardo Pazuello – Minister of Health under Jair Bolsonaro (PL) – would have committed a crime against humanity “by omission, by focusing on early treatment and by having made Manaus a human laboratory”.
