The Justice of Rio de Janeiro maintained the temporary arrest of gynecologist Walter Vieira, one of the partners of the PCS Lab Salemein Nova Iguaçu, Baixada Fluminense, investigated for issuing erroneous reports that allowed transplantation of HIV-infected organs. Vieira underwent a custody hearing this Tuesday (15).
Ivanilson Fernandes dos Santos, a laboratory technician, and Jacqueline Iris Bacellar de Assis, a company employee, also involved in the case and who are arrested, have not yet undergone a custody hearing.
The Civil Police arrested, this Wednesday (16), laboratory technician Cleber de Oliveira dos Santos, the fourth person investigated for issuing erroneous reports. He was the last fugitive. As a result, all arrest warrants for this Monday’s operation (14), issued as a result of police investigations, were executed.
Two donors had incorrect HIV reports signed by the laboratory, which was responsible for testing before the organs were sent for transplants in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Donors were considered negative when they were actually positive for the virus. As a result, six patients who received the transplants were infected with HIV.
Clarification
The Regional Pharmacy Council of the state of Rio (CRF-RJ) released a note informing that the PCS Lab Saleme laboratory is not registered with the council. According to the entity, the laboratory did not have pharmacists registered with the council.
The note says that “the laboratory technician mentioned in the investigations (Jacqueline Iris Bacellar de Assis) has active registration with the CRF-RJ”.
According to the council, the acting president, Luzimar Gualter, initiated internal procedures. If violations of health or ethical standards are found, penalties may result in the definitive revocation of professional registration.
