Qualcomm said on Monday that it is bringing the technology initially developed for its notebook chips to its cell phone semiconductors, with the aim of making them more powerful in performing tasks linked to the generative artificial intelligence (AI).
The San Diego-based company is the world’s largest seller of semiconductors for cell phones. In an effort to expand its business, the company in 2021 hired a group of former Apple engineers to help it design notebook chips, which went on sale this year and are helping power AI capabilities in Windows. from Microsoft.

Now, the technology developed by that team – a set of custom computing technology that Qualcomm calls “Oryon” – is being put into the company’s cellphone semiconductors for the first time.
“AI has been one of those areas where I think Google is moving quickly, but we have our own technology to offer end developers,” Chris Patrick, Qualcomm’s senior vice president and general manager for mobile, told Reuters.
Qualcomm said Samsung Electronics, Asustek Computer and Xiaomi, among several other manufacturers, will use the new chip.
